VA benefits: the basics for veterans

VA disability compensation is a tax-free monthly payment for veterans with conditions caused or made worse by their service.

• VA doesn't add your ratings: it combines them. A 50% and a 30% make 65%, which rounds to 70%.
• At 30% and up, VA pays more if you have a spouse, children or parents who depend on you.
• Rates go up every December 1.
• An accredited representative (VSO) helps you file your claim for free.
